How LASIK & PRK Laser Eye Surgeries Work - UELC

How Does Laser Eye Surgery Work?

Laser eye surgery is one of the best technological advances when it comes to eye care. It is also a popular procedure in Canada, with many people choosing to undergo it to enhance their vision. As a leading eye clinic, UELC has the resources and expertise to provide several types of laser eye procedures, including LASIK eye surgery and PRK eye surgery. We offer all types of laser eye surgery to meet varied needs and match the requirements of each patient. Read on to learn about these procedures and understand all the options available to you, so you know how laser eye surgery works and can make an informed decision.

LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis. It is a surgical procedure that uses a laser to treat farsightedness, nearsightedness, and astigmatism. For LASIK eye surgery, the surgeon will create a thin flap-like structure in the cornea using laser technology. They will fold back the flap, remove some corneal tissue, lay it back to cover the area.

LASIK can help achieve a steeper cornea in farsighted patients, whereas, in nearsighted people, it is an excellent way to straighten the too-steep cornea. Surgeons also use this procedure to correct astigmatism by smoothing an irregular corneal bed and ensuring a natural shape.

PRK

Photorefractive keratectomy, or PRK eye surgery, is mostly the same as the LASIK procedure. However, it differs in how the surgeon removes the epithelium or the surface layer of the cornea and prepares your eye for laser treatment.

How Do Lasers Work?

The laser typically used for eye surgeries emits ultraviolet light of a specific wavelength, which is 193 nanometers. The high-energy pulses of light can help penetrate a small portion of the cornea. Moreover, they have the ability to eliminate as little as 0.25 microns of corneal tissue.

Surgeons use lasers to accurately remove the tissue and reshape the corneal surface in the right way. Doing so will allow rays of light to focus correctly onto the retina and improve your eyesight.

Choosing the PRK Procedure

With PRK eye surgery, the surgeon will remove the surface cells of the eye and apply the laser. This is why PRK is commonly known as surface ablation. It may be the right procedure for you in the following circumstances:

  • If you have a pre-existing eye condition or a problem on the cornea which can be better corrected with PRK than LASIK
  • If you have a structural abnormality in the cornea causing the surgeon to believe LASIK may be an unsafe option

The Right Laser Eye Surgery for Each Patient

To determine which laser procedure is ideal for you, the surgeon will perform a thorough examination and conduct tests. They will examine your corneal contour, assess your overall eye health, measure the cornea, evaluate the condition of your eyes, and consider your medical history.
